The White Lotus – Our Samui Starlets!

The White Lotus has quickly become one of HBO’s most talked-about series, captivating audiences with its sharp social satire and stunning locations. As we eagerly anticipate the third season, let’s look back at the show’s journey and what we can expect from its next tropical adventure.

Seasons 1 and 2: Hawaii and Sicily

The White Lotus debuted in 2021, set against a luxurious resort in Hawaii. Creator Mike White expertly wove together stories of privileged guests and the staff catering to their every whim, exposing the dark undercurrents beneath the surface of paradise. The show’s first season tackled themes of wealth, entitlement, and cultural appropriation, all while keeping viewers guessing with its central mystery.

Season 2 transported us to Sicily, where a new cast of characters (save for Jennifer Coolidge’s fan-favourite Tanya) checked into another White Lotus property. This time, the focus shifted to sexual politics and relationship dynamics, with the azure waters of the Mediterranean as a backdrop to tales of infidelity, generational wealth, and local legends.

Season 3: Thailand Beckons

As we look forward to The White Lotus Season 3, excitement is building for what promises to be another captivating instalment. This time, the series is heading to Thailand, where the filming took place in Bangkok, Phuket, and Koh Samui. You’ll recognise plenty of the cast!

While details are still under wraps, we can expect a diverse cast of characters navigating the complexities of relationships against the backdrop of Thai culture and spirituality.

Four Seasons Koh Samui

Perhaps the most exciting news for fans of luxury travel is that the primary filming location for Season 3 was at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui. This stunning property, nestled among pristine sandy beaches and lush tropical greenery, is set to become a character in its own right.

The Four Seasons Koh Samui offers a wealth of amenities that will play into the show’s plot. From private pool villas to beachside dining experiences, the resort provides the perfect setting for the drama and intrigue we’ve come to expect from The White Lotus.

What to Expect

While specific plot details are still top secret, creator Mike White has hinted that Season 3 will explore themes of death and Eastern spirituality. This shift in focus, combined with the breathtaking Thai setting, promises to bring a new depth to the series.

With a cast that includes both returning faces (like Natasha Rothwell from Season 1) and exciting newcomers (including K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink), The White Lotus Season 3 is shaping up to be a must-watch series.

As we wait for the new season to premiere on 17 February, fans can look forward to more of the biting social commentary, unexpected twists, and gorgeous scenery that have made The White Lotus a cultural phenomenon.

Local support is often invaluable in major international productions like The White Lotus. From providing logistical assistance to serving as extras in crowd scenes, the people of Koh Samui have contributed in numerous ways behind the scenes. The island’s hospitality industry, including hotel staff, restaurant workers, and tour guides, played a part in ensuring the smooth operation of the production.

Scott Schaeffer, HBO’s Senior Vice President for Production, praised the professionalism of the Thai production team and expressed gratitude for the support from the government and locals, suggesting significant local involvement in making the filming process successful.

Many of Koh Samui’s residents, including our own local ladies, had the opportunity to participate as extras, provide local knowledge, or support the production in various capacities. Though not widely publicised, their contributions are essential in creating the authentic Thai atmosphere viewers will see on screen.

The White Lotus Season 3 is poised to highlight many things we all love about Koh Samui, from its stunning beaches and jungly landscapes to its culture and warm hospitality. As the show brings the island’s beauty to screens worldwide, we can expect a significant surge in interest in Samui as a travel destination. This “White Lotus Effect” has already been observed in previous filming locations, with Hawaii and Sicily experiencing increased tourism following their respective seasons. Koh Samui will likely see a similar boost, attracting viewers eager to experience the island’s charm and luxury firsthand.
