Thailand’s National Children’s Day

Thailand’s National Children’s Day, known locally as Wan Dek, is an annual celebration that took place on Saturday, 11 January 2025. This special day, observed on the second Saturday of January each year, holds significant importance in Thai culture. It honours the country’s young generation and their potential to shape the nation’s future.

Wan Dek has many events and activities designed to entertain, educate, and inspire children across Thailand. A key tradition of this day is the announcement of a motivational motto by the Prime Minister. The celebration offers unique opportunities for children to explore government institutions and military facilities, providing them with firsthand knowledge of how these organizations operate and potentially inspiring future career paths.

Throughout the country, parks, temples, and public spaces transform into playgrounds, offering interactive games, rides, magic shows, and puppet performances. Museums, zoos, and various attractions often provide discounted or free entry, making the day accessible to families from all walks of life. Schools, shopping centres, and local communities join the festivities by organizing special events such as mini-concerts, art exhibitions showcasing children’s talents, and educational workshops. Koh Samui was busy with many different events across the island – various happenings took place at Nathon Pier, Samui Naval Base, Central Samui, Saiyor Garden, Ban Lan Len Samui and Wat Praderm School in Na Muang.

Wan Dek is an occasion for families to bond and create memories. Parents take this opportunity to express gratitude for their children and reinforce essential values. The celebration represents Thailand’s commitment to encouraging its youth and providing a supportive environment for children’s growth, ensuring their happiness, and protecting their rights.
