Supporting Earthquake Victims in Myanmar: A Community Effort from Sisters on Samui

At Sisters on Samui, our mission is rooted in compassion, community, and connection — with a strong focus on supporting initiatives here on our island. While we don’t often extend our fundraising efforts beyond Samui, this cause felt particularly close to our hearts. Hnin, the warm and generous owner of Burma Kitchen, is a beloved member of our community and originally from Myanmar — and the impact of the recent earthquake deeply touched us all. Supporting her efforts to bring aid to those suffering felt right.

On April 9th, Hnin, the owner of Burma Kitchen, hosted a heartfelt charity buffet dinner at her restaurant in Fisherman’s Village — with wonderful support from her friends Amanda, Gloria, and Elodie. Sisters on Samui followed with a fundraising effort at our April Ladies Lunch, ensuring that our community could contribute to the recovery efforts in a meaningful way.

The funds raised from the Burma Kitchen dinner, along with additional community donations, have been directed to Soroptimist International of Yangon — a trusted organisation committed to ensuring aid reaches those most in need.

To date, Hnin has raised 84,208 THB – including 41,600 THB from the Burma Kitchen charity dinner, and the 26,000 THB donated by Sisters on Samui from our Ladies Lunch held at at Melia Koh Samui on 16th April 2025. The contribution from Sisters on Samui was made up of 100 THB per lady in attendance (part of our ongoing community initiative), generous individual donations on the day, and a matching contribution from SOS.

The first project these donations will support is the construction of a double squat toilet at the San Yadanar Nun Monastery in Sagaing, where 40 nuns are currently living without any toilet facilities. With monsoon rains looming, proper sanitation is not only a matter of comfort but critical to preventing disease. Your generosity is helping build not just a toilet, but a safer and healthier environment.

“We are committed to continuing our efforts — after this project, we plan to help build more toilets, help families with resettlement and sanitation facilities for other community centers in need, depending on the funds left and what we can continue to raise“
