Koh Kraft by SOS, a new initiative launched in 2024, has made significant strides in empowering local women through essential arts and crafts skills. Over the past couple of months, two groups of women have completed a comprehensive four-week training programme, gaining valuable expertise in crochet, macramé, and sewing. This initiative helps participants create beautifully handcrafted, sustainable products, boosts their confidence, and opens new income opportunities.
The programme has grown substantially since its inception. Koh Kraft now boasts four sewing machines, an overlocker, macramé stands, and a general workspace for crochet, knitting, and hand sewing. This expansion in resources allows for more comprehensive training and skill development.
Khun Jezz, the dedicated Thai manager, has been instrumental in promoting this initiative across Samui. On 1 March, she organised an open day at Koh Kraft, attracting local women eager to learn about the programme and try their hand at creating simple items. This event showcased the initiative’s growing interest and potential impact on the community.
As the programme gains momentum, Koh Kraft seeks a new Thai manager to take over from Khun Jezz. This part-time position, requiring two days a week, is ideal for someone with strong organisational and coordination skills who is also passionate about learning new crafts. The role offers an excellent opportunity for personal growth and community involvement.
By teaching essential skills like machine sewing, hand sewing, macramé, and crochet, Koh Kraft creates sustainable income opportunities for Thai women. This initiative aligns with global trends in microenterprise and artisan-made goods, addressing pressing design and social justice issues. As the programme continues to evolve, it has the potential to significantly impact the lives of local women and contribute to the broader economic development of the community.
For those interested in supporting this meaningful cause or learning more about the project, Koh Kraft welcomes visitors to their space. Whether you’re a craft enthusiast or want to contribute, there are numerous ways to get involved and make a difference in empowering local women.
