It’s no secret that waste management is a growing challenge in many parts of the world, and Thailand’s beautiful islands are no exception. A recent social media post from a passionate resident highlights a concern that’s close to the hearts of many: the increasing presence of trash in our streets, beaches, and neighborhoods. While it’s easy to feel discouraged by the sight of litter, there’s another side to this story—one filled with action and community spirit.
United Nations Thailand is Supporting Local Solutions
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UN-Habitat, with backing from the Joint SDG Fund, are working closely with Koh Samui’s communities to reshape the island’s future. Their approach centers on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), translating global ambitions into local action.
Community Waste Banks
One of the most promising initiatives is the network of community waste banks. These banks allow residents to drop off sorted recyclables in exchange for small financial rewards, encouraging sustainable behavior and generating income. They also foster community spirit and shared responsibility for the environment.
“Effective waste management starts with everyone—residents, businesses, and local leaders. By taking responsibility for our waste, separating it at the source, and supporting waste banks, Koh Samui moves closer to a zero-waste future”, explained Supinya Srithongkul, Deputy Mayor, Koh Samui Municipality.
Today, Koh Samui’s waste bank is part of a nationwide network of nearly 16,500, serving more than 4.3 million members and generating over THB 900 million (about $25 million) in community welfare benefits.
Local Engagement and Data-Driven Action
The UN’s Voluntary Local Review (VLR) process has brought together residents, local authorities, and the private sector to identify priorities and shape practical solutions. This collaborative approach builds trust and ensures that investments align with community needs.
Naon Suwanteerakit, Deputy Director, Tourism Authority of Thailand in Koh Samui reinforced, “Urban waste in Koh Samui affects more than just the environment—it impacts our quality of life, tourism, and economy. A cleaner Koh Samui means a thriving future for all”.

Positive Change in Action
Koh Samui is not alone in this journey. The lessons learned here are inspiring other Thai municipalities to localize the SDGs and invest in climate action, waste management, and sustainable development.
- Waste banks in pilot communities are thriving, with local leaders organizing waste sorting, collection, and recycling efforts that divert hundreds of kilograms of plastic and other materials each month.
- Hotels and resorts are joining sustainability pledges, eliminating single-use plastics, and supporting community cleanups and marine conservation efforts.
- Education and awareness programs are teaching the next generation about environmental stewardship, multiplying the impact of every positive action.
Financing the Future
To ensure long-term success, the UN is helping Koh Samui and Surat Thani province identify sustainable financing opportunities and develop climate-related project proposals. This support is vital for scaling up local solutions and ensuring that progress continues well into the future.
A Model for Thailand
Koh Samui’s journey shows what’s possible when a community stands united, supported by strong partnerships and a shared vision for sustainability. By turning waste into opportunity and placing people and the planet at the center of development, the island is becoming a model for others across Thailand.
The Challenge We Share
No one wants to see their home, whether it’s a bustling city or a tranquil island, marred by waste. Litter not only spoils the natural beauty of our surroundings but also poses real risks: attracting pests, creating health hazards, and leaving a poor impression on visitors. Most importantly, it threatens the very environment that sustains us all.
But as the original poster wisely notes, “What we see every day should not become normal.” Recognizing the problem is the first step toward solving it.
The Power of Positive Action
Despite the challenges, there’s a growing movement in Bophut (and beyond), one that proves real change is possible when people come together. Here are some of the inspiring ways locals and expats are making a difference:
1. Community Cleanups
Every month, groups of volunteers—families, students, business owners, and visitors—gather to pick up litter from beaches, streets, and parks. These events remove trash, build connections, encourage pride, and inspire others to join in.
2. Education and Awareness
Schools and community centers are teaching the next generation about the importance of environmental stewardship. Workshops, art projects, and educational campaigns help children and adults alike understand why proper waste disposal matters and how they can contribute.
3. Supporting Local Initiatives
Many businesses are stepping up by reducing single-use plastics, providing recycling bins, and sponsoring cleanup efforts. Some cafes even offer discounts to customers who bring reusable cups or bags, a small gesture that encourages lasting change.
4. Leading by Example
Perhaps most inspiring are the individuals who quietly make a difference every day: picking up litter during their morning walk, sorting their recyclables, or encouraging neighbors to do the same. Their actions may seem small, but together, they create a ripple effect that transforms communities.
A Shared Responsibility
“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” The benefits of a cleaner, healthier environment shape the future for our children, our visitors, and everyone who calls this place home.
How You Can Help
- Join a Cleanup: Look for local events or start your own with friends and neighbors.
- Spread the Word: Share information about proper waste disposal and recycling.
- Support Eco-Friendly Businesses: Choose shops and restaurants that prioritize sustainability.
- Lead by Example: Every piece of litter you pick up, every plastic bag you refuse, sends a powerful message.
Together, We Make a Difference
By working together, respecting our environment, and taking pride in our community, we can leave this island better than we found it.
Let’s celebrate the efforts of those who care, and let’s join them. Because when a community stands united, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.
